Die E-Mail ist mittlerweile durch ihre Verfügbarkeit, Schnelligkeit und Flexibilität mit dem Telefonieren gleich zu setzen. Mit der Menge steigt auch die Komplexität hinsichtlich Verwaltung, Suche und die Kategorisierung. Laut aktuellen Untersuchungen machen Spam zur Zeit ca. 90% des Mail-Verkehrs aus. Ohne technische Hilfsmittel sind die Bewältigung dieser Mails und die Abwehr von Schad-Mails kaum noch möglich. Übliche Verfahren zur Kategorisierung von Dokumenten oder auch E-Mails verwenden statistische Verfahren wie die Vector Support Machine oder Bayessche Filter. Eine Alternative hierfür fi ndet sich aus der Forschungstätigkeit der Projektgruppe „‘Neuronale Netze und Assoziativspeicher“‘ der Universität Hildesheim. Das Resultat ist eine Implementierung fehlertolerante und assoziativer Suchverfahren (SENTRAX). Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit Untersuchung dieser Verfahren.
